Hindus celebram nascimento do deus Krishna
Draped in a spirit of festivity, devotees thronged colourfully-decorated temples and kept fasts till midnight as Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, was celebrated across the country on Sunday with exuberance and gaiety.
Chanting "Krishna Hare Hare", the faithful made a beeline to illuminated temples which reverberated with religious songs amid blowing of conch shells.
Areas in-and-around most of the temples were wrapped in a multi-layered security cover in view of a wave of bomb attacks in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Jaipur recently.
A huge posse of police personnel kept a hawk-eye vigil near the places of worship as devotees were subjected to strict security checks.
As part of Janmashtami celebrations, clay pots called "Dahi-Handi", filled with curd and butter, were suspended high above the ground at many places.
To the constant chorus of "Govinda, Govinda", youths formed human pyramids to reach to the pot and then broke it to the merriment of all those present.
Colourful floats depicting the birth of Lord Krishna, his pranks as "Makhan Chor" and his frolics with Radha adorned temples where worshippers offered fruits, flowers and sweets to their beloved God to celebrate his birthday.
